ALSHAMIYA VILLA 2014

The refurbishment and new-build extension to a two storey private dwelling for a young family, located in AlShamiya, Kuwait. The plot presented several challenges: one being how to draw in light to the back of the plot; which has neighbouring buildings on three sides. The project focused on a new facade treatment for the existing property and the introduction of a courtyard space to the back extension. The courtyard consists of a small pool that functions as a light well, serving all the bedrooms on the upper levels as well as being a central focal point from which the everyday spaces circulate around, at ground level. As a water feature, the eyes are drawn to the pool area from the onset; from the entrance of the home as well as from the formal reception spaces to the front of the existing property. The rooftop is primarily utilised as a service space. However, this space is elevated by the addition of a multipurpose room with sliding glass doors that open out to a roof deck with views overlooking Kuwait city.
