MADEENAH MAPS
WALKING TOUR & CONCEPTUAL MAP
At the heart of Madeenah is the concept of the map. From a cyclic investigation and research process, a text-based narrative is expressed visually through a conceptual map. This functions as a digital layer of information above a traditional mapped representation of Kuwait. More than simply a navigational tool, the map here is re-imagined as a dynamic mode for relating contextual data and sharing crowd-sourced information gathered from the Walking Tours.
Madeenah is a multidisciplinary platform that aggregates this knowledge from its community of partners and participants through a number of spatial practices; taking experience as the central mode of knowledge production. Madeenah curates walking tours and invites researchers and enthusiasts to explore and share their views on the interconnected relationships between society and the city.
DICHOTOMIES OF MAKKAH: A SENSE OF SCALE 2015
MADEENAH WALKING TOUR & MAP
IN COLLABORATION WITH THE AA SCHOOL MAKKAH
Located in the Valley of Abraham, Makkah’s position at the intersection of water, trade and pilgrimage conditioned the emergence of a ‘sanctuary’ that would flourish to become the idealized symbol of sanctity for Muslims today. A walk through its alleyways is an exercise to generate multiple senses of scale, to navigate the Holy City between that which is perceived and that which is actual. With that newly-acquired knowledge and the curiosity it inspired, we designed a walking tour to explore an alternative understanding of the city’s changing urban conditions.
